UNR Greenhouse Research Facility

The University of Nevada, Reno Greenhouse Research Facility is comprised of six greenhouses attached to one continuous head-house. The project is appropriately located at the UNR Valley Road Complex in close proximity to existing greenhouses and other agricultural experimental stations. The head-house is oriented East-West with each greenhouse having a North-South orientation. This optimizes the solar potential for each greenhouse and helps minimize summer solar gain on the head-house. This is also favorable orientation for the proposed photovoltaic array which is to be located on the roof top of the head-house. The greenhouses are constructed of state of the art glazing with an aluminum structure. Each greenhouse is fully automated and digitally controlled via local computer or internet connection. The head-house is constructed of insulated concrete panels with an exposed steel roof structure on the interior of the building. Insulated concrete was chosen for its durability and thermal characteristics. Also incorporated into the design of the head-house are clerestory windows which harvest daylight and help minimize the use of electrical lighting within the head-house. The facility functions as an industrial type building with a sensativity toward experimental, argricultural research
