UNR Palmer Engineering Building Renovation
The historic Palmer Engineering Building was renovated to provide additional laboratory and administrative space for the department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering. Work included a complete removal of the existing interior construction, full seismic retrofit, and addition of 3,000 square feet by infilling an unused wind tunnel.
The interior of the building was reconfigured to allow for additional research space and more faculty offices. General purpose classrooms were maintained at the first level and a large teaching lab was created opposite the main entrance. The manufacturing laboratory was relocated to provide a link with the technology lab at the basement level. Additional restroom facilities, secondary basement exit, and a full upgrade to the elevator were provided to bring the facility into compliance with current building code.
Special consideration was given to the historic components of the building, with the original wood trim salvaged and reinstalled at the first floor. A color palette and floor tile pattern was chosen to evoke the finishes of the original construction period.
