MOFFAT OPEN SPACE SHADE STRUCTURE
CARSON CITY PARKS, RECREATION & OPEN SPACE DEPARTMENT
This community project is for a designated open space, featuring several significant rock outcroppings and a large knoll in the center of the parcel. The site offers outstanding views of Carson City and the Carson Range of the Sierra Nevada beyond.
The structure is simple in form and creates a visual landmark for the Moffat Open Space. By siting the structure as a part of the hill rather than at the very top, the knoll is left undisturbed by built form. The structure is an identifiable place for reflection and contemplation of the natural beauty of the site, and to enjoy panoramic views of Carson City and the surrounding mountains.
The structure has a base of decomposed granite and several rocks gathered from the excavation that provide seating. To further express the importance of the sun’s path on the structure, the rocks have been placed such that the column shadows them during specific hours between the spring and fall equinox.
The shade structure provides shade patterns and architectural images that vary with the changing sun patterns and the viewer’s perspective. Both the concrete and steel will weather and patina as time passes to further anchor the structure to the site.
H+K Architects saw the Moffat Open Space Shade Structure as an incredible opportunity to show architecture and design working in harmony with nature to create a truly unique community space.
